Q&A with Julianna Coleman (BFA Ceramics)

Introduce yourself. Where are you from originally?
Hi, I’m Julianna Coleman. I’m from Saltillo, MS. I am currently completing my BFA in ceramics.

What attracted you to the Department of Art & Art History?
After taking art in high school I knew I wanted to be an artist and I grew up coming to Oxford every weekend for football games with my family, so coming here already felt like coming home.

What type of artwork do you create?
Right now, I create large sculptural vessels that focus on the idea of societal expectations and the process of breaking away from those ideals.

Could you explain your process?
I begin my vessels by throwing the base on the wheel to create a more structurally sound base. I then complete the pieces with large slabs which help me gain height.

Which artists do you look to for inspiration?
I few artists I look to are Sara Ballek, Soojin Choi, and Denny Gerwin.

Which professors inspired you the most?
I would say, Matt Long. I am very thankful to have been able to study under such an experienced artist. Having him as a professor has really helped me understand clay. Studying under him has also helped broaden my vision of what I can do with clay.

What has been your favorite class during your years here?
It would have to be ceramics. With ceramics, I am able to completely focus on creating when in the studio. Spending 12 hours in the studio can sometimes feel like 1, so dedicating time is easy. I also love sharing a space with the amazing people I’ve met through the class.

Could you describe a favorite memory here in the department?
Some of my favorite memories are usually just me and my fellow classmates being goofy and laughing together!

What does the Department of Art & Art History mean to you?
I really feel like I grew up here and matured into the person I am today because of the department. I was also able to meet so many amazing people and I am so grateful for that, it will always mean so much to me.

Do you have any advice for incoming art students?
Don’t be afraid to try different things, failing leads to progress.

What type of music do you listen to while you create art?
Music can actually be super distracting for me so I end up listening to true crime podcasts like My Favorite Murder.

What are you binge-watching while being a couch potato?
Right now I’ve been rewatching Bones. I love trying to figure out who the killer is before they do on the show.

Do you have any hobbies outside of the art department?
I play a lot of video games like The Legend of Zelda, Stardew Valley, and Sims 4.

What is your favorite thing about Oxford or the University?
I really love seeing the new landscaping on campus every season, it’s something I always look forward to.

What is your favorite restaurant in Oxford?
There’s nothing I love more than a Philly cheesesteak from Blind Pig!

Can we find you on social media?
Of course! @julicoleman.art on Instagram.

Do you have any plans after graduation?
I plan to apply for residencies and eventually get my MFA.
