Introduce yourself and tell us where you are from.
My name is Katie Ayres and I am from a small town in Mississippi called, New Albany.

What attracted you to the Department of Art & Art History?
The Graphic Design Department was very intriguing to me. I was inspired by the students artwork that was displayed on the walls.

What type of artwork do you create and can you discuss your process?
I love to create mixed media art that specifically tailor to illustration and typography. My process starts of pretty basic, I jot down all of my ideas first. From there, I narrow down the objective of the project and the mediums that best suit the message I am trying to convey. I then sketch out any rough drafts on paper and then transfer them to either Procreate or Photoshop and start to work on project digitally.

Which artists do you look to for inspiration?
I admire Paul Scotter’s expression of expectations in his art that explores self-awareness through patterns and vibrant colors. Paul’s art influences my concept of art because self-awareness is a subject I am inspired by and want to express. I am also influenced by Jayoon Choi and how she executes expressionism. Our concepts are similar because she digs deep into the psychological factors of one’s self and I strive to answer the underlying question of things.

Which professors inspired you the most?
Bryce Heesacker, Tyler Barnes, and Philip Jackson have all inspired me. They have showed me abstraction, color theory, and simplistic ways to think conceptually about my art.

What has been your favorite class during your years here?
I loved Advance Graphic Design and the different projects we covered. The class environment was really fun and lively.

Do you have a favorite memory here in the department?
One of my favorite memories here was during a GRID party. The other students and I ordered pizza and watched a movie while we went over some design ideas.

Do you have any advice for incoming art students?
Time management and an open mind is key to have when creating well rounded projects.

Do you have any hobbies outside of the art department?
I love to create new art and listen to music mainly, but I also enjoy walking nature trails.

What is your favorite thing about Oxford or the University?
I love how lively Oxford is and the variety of entertainment there is to do.

Can we find you on social media?
Yes, you can find me at my website here https://katieayresdesigncom.myportfolio.com

Do you have any plans after graduation?
Yes, I plan to apply to the Mabus Agency to become a part of their team in Tupelo, MS.
