Introduce yourself and tell us where you are from.
My name is Adelle Harvey, I am from Ocean Springs. Ms and I am pursuing a BFA in Graphic Design.

What attracted you to the Department of Art & Art History?
I have always been driven to connect with my environment and with those around me. Art and music provide me with the creative and communal outlets I need to experiment and grow. I saw a space for myself here in the art department and was impressed by the faculty, the course offerings, and the opportunity to learn to better express myself through various artistic mediums.

What type of artwork do you create and can you discuss your process?
I create both graphic and sound art. I am experimenting with song writing, sonic art, graphic notation, design, and typography to create graphic scores for pieces I compose. I like to work with physical mediums as well as digital. I use paint, ink and other mediums to leave different marks and textures that resemble the type of textures heard in the music. My art is a lot about surprise, chance, and experimenting.

Which artists do you look to for inspiration?
I am inspired by designers like David Carson for his use of abstraction with type and image. I am alsoinspired by designers Leta and wade Sobierajski for their project Music for your eyes which investigates sound, shape, harmony, and color.

Which professors inspired you the most?
I have been most fortunate throughout my years at Ole Miss to have the opportunity to work with manyprofessors who have positively impacted me and assisted me in pursing my goals as an artist and designer.Professor Tyler Barnes and Professor Byard Hudd have both challenged and inspired me to be a better, more thoughtful designer. Professor Bryce Heesacker not only introduced me to the world of sonic art, but he has consistently helped me and urged me to think outside the box.

What has been your favorite class during your years here?
My favorite class throughout my years at the university was Sonic Arts. This class is taught by Professor Bryce Heesacker and a brief dive into music theory and an introduction to Ableton Live.

Do you have a favorite memory here in the department?
My favorite memory from my time spent in the art department is the carnival that was held outside of Meek Hall. The art department set up games to win prizes and had a food truck parked right outside of the building.

Do you have any advice for incoming art students?
Being an art major is very time consuming and you will be in the classroom/studio for most of the day. Projects require a lot of focus, time, and energy, therefore many students get burnt out pretty quick. My advice for all the future, hard-working students is to step away from the computer or put the brush/pencil down every so often and get outside for a walk and some fresh air.

Do you have any hobbies outside of the art department?
I am a musician!

What is your favorite thing about Oxford or the University?
My favorite thing about Oxford and the University is the walkability of the city and the campus. With so many hours of the day spent in classrooms or sitting behind a screen, being able to get outside and enjoy the beauty of my surroundings when walking to class or heading to the square to meet friends was relaxing.

Do you have any plans after graduation?
I hope to get a job in the design industry, as well as produce music and continue to experiment with graphic notation and typography.
