Introduce yourself and tell us where you are from.
My name is Brailey Hoey and I am originally from a suburb outside of Atlanta, Georgia, but I now live in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida
What attracted you to the Department of Art & Art History?
I have always had a passion for creation which drove me to seek out a community of like-minded individuals who share this. The Art and Art History Department has such a supportive network of individuals, and this proved to be a perfect fit for me. Their willingness to assist one another regardless of circumstances served as a significant catalyst for my decision to pursue a BFA. Over the past four years, I’ve cherished the bonds formed with classmates and professors alike, both within and beyond my chosen emphasis.
What type of artwork do you create and can you discuss your process?
I dabble in various art forms, from illustrations using Procreate, painting, and sketching, to crafting graphic elements like packaging designs, brand identities, and posters. Depending on the project, I often integrate illustrative techniques into the design process, whether it’s sketching a logo or incorporating my own drawings into a layout. Typically, I start with loose ideas, then move onto rough drafts to map out a direction. As I refine my vision, I work within the Creative Cloud, tweaking and perfecting along the way.
Which artists do you look to for inspiration?
My artistic influences span a spectrum, drawing inspiration from boundary-breaking artists like Paul Rand and Hannah Hoch. Hannah Hoch used her art to confront pressing social is- sues such as gender inequality, misogyny, and sexual identity, prompting awareness and compassion in her audience. On the other hand, Paul Rand captivated people with his innovative use of typography, colors, and media, infusing his work with joy and happiness. Both artists brought about change through their art, a path I aim to follow by incorporating their values into my own work.
Which professors inspired you the most?
Over the past 4 years I have learned a lot from all my professors in the art school. I think every professor has taught me something that I consistently think about within my creative process. Within my graphic design emphasis, I think Tyler Barnes and Hudd Byard have been extremely significant in my growth within this field. I am constantly learning from them and bouncing ideas off each other which has proven to peak my passion for graphic design. Listening to their creative ideas sparked by my own has been truly inspiring, and it’s a dynamic I eagerly anticipate in my creative journey.
What has been your favorite class during your years here?
Choosing a favorite class is tough, but if I had to pick, it would be either packaging design or intermediate painting. I really enjoyed packaging design, as rebranding and coming up with my own brand was a very enjoyable experience for me. I thought intermediate painting was a highlight as well as it pushed me out of my comfort zone with my art style, which has proved to have been extremely valuable in all of my other classes here.
Do you have a favorite memory here in the department?
I think one of my favorite memories was putting up my pre-thesis show. It was a rewarding experience being able to see all the work I have done over the past year or so hung up in the gallery with my classmates. I have no doubt that I will have the same feeling about my thesis being put up as well!
Do you have any advice for incoming art students?
My biggest piece of advice for incoming art students would be to build connections with your classmates and professors early on. Not only does this make your classes more fun, but having a network you can bounce ideas off and discuss upcoming projects adds immense value to the experience.
Do you have any hobbies outside of the art department?
I don’t know if I would consider this a hobby or not, but I really enjoy running. I think it is a great way to take a break from the day and any of the stresses you may be having. It additionally always makes me more motivated to do my work once I get that surge of serotonin!
What is your favorite thing about Oxford or the University?
I think my favorite thing about Oxford would be the square. It’s just so charming and gives the town such a cozy feel, as it is the perfect balance between not too big and not too small. And then there’s the Grove – especially on game days. The sense of community and love for Ole Miss is just unbeatable.

Do you have any plans after graduation?
I do not have any immediate plans lined up for me currently, as I really want to focus on getting my portfolio together, and I would love to be able to include my thesis in it as well.
